Notified bodies

The third-party assessment infrastructure, still being built out.

Notified bodies are the independent organisations that run third-party conformity assessment where the Regulation calls for it — the EU-type examination and full quality assurance routes involve them, while default products can self-assess under internal control F-026.

The capacity question

Designation is in progress: notified bodies for this Regulation are being designated, and the Commission targets sufficient capacity by December 2026 on a best-efforts basis F-037. For products whose route runs through a notified body, that designation timeline is a real planning input, not administrative trivia F-037 F-026.

What to watch

The chapter from Article 35 onward sets up the machinery — notifying authorities, competence criteria, identification numbers, coordination. The list of designated bodies and their scopes is the operational fact that matters; it is exactly the kind of slow-moving infrastructure change worth monitoring rather than re-checking by hand F-037.
